HCC Quest Guide
From MythMonger Wiki
Important Notice: Since the Dec 15, 2009 update where many HCC repeatable quests, especially the Hedge Piglets quest, were nerfed without warning by the developers, this guide is currently outdated, pending review of the situation.
The original guide was written and posted by Zlatko Bajić (Croatia) in the Mythmonger official forum (circa December 2009), and reposted (with some edits) in the wiki with permission.

Author's note: Because of the major changes in repeatable hcc quests made during December 15, 2009 update,, which seem to be permanent, i decided to rewrite this quide. original version

Repeatable HCC Quests
Getting Heroic Challenge Cards (HCCs) can be a problem for players who don't (or can't) donate real money to Mythmonger.
There are several ways other than donating (or doing offers) to get HCCs. The most obvious way is probably selling character/challenge cards for HCCs, or buying them for coins on the trading boards.
I think that's pretty clear and there isn't much to talk about it, so I'm going to concentrate on another way to get them –- repeatable HCC quests.
There are some quests which give you HCCs and aren't repeatable, but that means that you get a quite limited amount, so I'll skip those here.
One of the questions people often ask is given the current HCC price on the boards (which isn't permanent), this quest really worth it? So, during the analysis of these quests, I'll try to answer this question by considering how many coins you spend on average when completing them.
Goblin Farm Raid
- Requires: 15 Goblin Runts
- Reward: 10 HCCs
1 runt is worth 11 coins in the card shop, so that's 165 coins for 10 HCCs (16.5 coins per HCC). Pretty cheap, huh?
Of course, it takes some time (and sanity) to do this quest over and over again. It takes 1 turn from Mangled Forest to Forest Hideout, and 1 turn to get back, so that's 2 turns to complete the quest. However, if you travel with coins (which is a lot faster), that will cost you only 40 coins (20 coins to hideout, 20 coins back) -- 32 actually, if you have the Rebel Pendant.
So, that would be 165 + 40 coins (let's say it's 40, it's a little less actually, because on 2nd travel, you can already start the quest again, right?), which is 205 coins for 10 HCCs. Quite cheap! So, 1 HCC = around 20 coins.
If you travel by turns, it's cheaper, around 15 coins per HCC.
Of course, if you don't have any Goblin Runts, you can't do the quest, which is a big limitation, since you can't get an infinite number of HCCs this way.
In conclusion,
- Cost of 1 HCC = ~20 coins
- Advantages:
- Cheap (around 20 coins per HCC)
- Goblin Runts are easy to get/common
- Disadvantages:
- Limited by number of Goblin Runts you have
- Requires travelling from Mangled Forest to Forest Hideout
Rebuilding the Bandit King's Forces
1 Thugbot is worth 15 coins in the card shop, so that's 300 coins for 5 hcc's, which is 60 coins for 1 hcc.
This quest doesn't require any travelling at all, so you can just camp in Forest Hideout, catching those wisps or goblin captains and stashing some hcc's along the way – especially since thughbots are quite common in there.
However, this quest is a lot more expensive than goblin runt quest and thughbots aren't nearly as common as goblin runts (so there's an even larger limitation in number of hcc's you can get this way), so goblin runt quest is clearly a much better way to get HCCs.
In conclusion,
- Price of 1 HCC = 60 coins
- Advantages:
- No travelling included
- Thugbots are still easy to get and somewhat common
- Disadvantages:
- Expensive compared to goblin runt quest
- Limited by number of Thugbots you have (same problem as the Goblin Runt quest, again)
- You have to stay in Forest Hideout (not a very good place to be if you're not looking for any particular cards in there)
Jewel Cutting
This quest became available with the introduction of East Core Mines (ECM).
Ok, so you get 15 HCCs, which is better than from the quests above. However, you need gemstones. They're sometimes dropped by some ECM creatures. Generally speaking, the drops are better on higher tiers. Now, the tricky part here is to determine how much it takes to get 25 gemstones. Some Tier 1 creatures can drop 1 gemstone; some Tier 2 can drop 2 etc.
First of all, let's see what you can get with 15 HCCs in the mines (they act like T2CCs). Using the drop rates collected so far1, with 15 HCCs in ECM you can get one T5CC on average. I'd say you probably won't get 25 gemstones with that. Of course, you actually earn something by catching those tier cards (but not really on lower tiers). It's hard to determine the price of hcc's in this quest, especially through tier cards, since you spend a lot of time and coins (if you buy T1CCs). T1CCs are worth 40 coins, so if HCCs are worth double, that would be 80 coins each.
However, there's another important aspect of this quest. In Ecorae, Fontis Sapienta and New Feron, you can echange 25 gemstones for 100 FCCs (faction challenge cards). That would put the price of HCCs on ~65 coins each (25 gemstones = 15 HCCs = 100 FCCs = 1000 coins).
Personally, i think 100 fcc's are worth more than 15 hcc's, but here's the interesting part – can you sell hcc's for more than 65 coins on the boards? If yes, you can invest your gemstones in coins, and use those coins to buy fcc's.
For example, if you sell 15 hcc's @80 coins each, you'll get 1200 coins, with which you can buy 120 fcc's (and you get only 100 from the quest). This is really a question of personal choice, but you also have to consider the time you need to get enough gemstones for this quest to be worth it.
I think that this quest is good for people who are hunting in the mines anway because they want to catch all ECM cards, and they farm gemstones along the way. But, to actually „hunt“ for gemstones? It's a lot easier and better (in my opinion) to hunt in other locations and simply change goblin runts (which are present in most locations) for HCCs.
In conclusion,
- Price of 1 HCC = ~65 coins (compared to faction quests) or ~80 coins (compared to T1CCs)
- Advantages:
- 15 HCCs -– more than you get from previous quests
- No travelling included
- Disadvantages:
- Limited by number of gemstones you have (which is a big problem here)
- Gemstones are pretty hard to get
- Expensive way of getting HCCs because of T1CCs' cost
- Requires hunting in East Core Mines
1Drop rates according to this forum thread
Conclusion
All in all, goblin runt quest seems to be the best way of getting HCCs when you have a stash of Goblin Runts. While normally hunting in numerous locations you can get a lot of them. They're cheap, have little power and simply useless for anything else than this quest.
The thugbot quest is not worth it, compared to Goblin Farm Raid quest. Thugbots have more deck power, they're worth more, you have to hand over more of them (20 compared to 15 goblin runts), and you get less hcc's. But, on the other hand, if you're an experienced player who doesn't have to care so much about his deck power, it's still a way to get some extra hcc's. In the end, it's not worth using those thugbots for anything (like selling them) other than just for deck power.
As for the gemstones quest, i think it's not a good way to get hcc's, even though it might be a good way to get faction cards (if you need those) without selling away your cards.
Also, don't forget that selling character cards on the boards can be a nice way to raise you hcc stash!
